10 Ways NOT to Share Your Story as a Business Owner

You know story is essential to connecting with your audience as a business owner. It's the secret sauce that weaves your business together and allows you to stand out in a crowded market. In fact, I bet you're already using story, riiiiight?

If you're not, that's ok! I'm breaking down 10 of The Most Common Story Mistakes that business owner's are making so YOU can avoid those suckers! And *if* you happen to be guilty of one of these offenses... don't worry! I have a solution for you as well!

HERE ARE 10 WAYS THAT YOU MAY BE USING STORY WRONG IN YOUR BUSINESS.

1. Not share at all

Hiding isn't helping you connect with anyone. I get it, you don't want to risk criticism from others. But if you don't share SOMETHING how are your dream clients going to find you?!

2. Air your dirty laundry.

You know that friend who shares all her relationship/family/work/cat/digestive problems on Facebook? Yeahhh--don't be THAT friend. Sharing is great.... but you don't have to share EVERYTHING. There is magic is being vague. Share just enough to support your message. You can save all those personal details for your next girls night out.

3. Be Boring.

You story is a meant to draw in your dream clients, NOT put them to sleep. If your story is simply "start to finish" without your personal flare or interesting hooks, revisit the drawing board.

4. Make it All about YOU.

I hate to burst your bubble, but your story's main focus shouldn't be YOU. That's right... if you want to grow a loyal client roster, you should NOT be the hero of the story, Ron.

5. Talk in circles... squirrel.

If you haven't taken the time to CRAFT your story, you've probably found yourself talking about #allthethings, right? Start crafting and stop rambling. There is a clear strategy to story that you may need to start exploring, friend.

6. No clear message or CTA.

What is the reason for sharing your story? THIS is where you start. If your story isn't guiding your audience to a message or call to action, you're leaving money on the table.... and who has time for that??

7. No vision. That's it?

Does your story end with where you are RIGHT NOW? Don't leave your audience hanging. They want to know whats next for you and how they fit into THAT picture. Include them on the journey and paint the picture of what's to come.

8. Too much business, not enough YOU.

Don't be a robot. You're more than the title on your business card. Your audience wants to know WHO they are working with, not what. Don't be afraid to add your personal touch to your business story.

9. Embellishing...

We shouldn't have to say this... but... don't lie. Your story is enough. No need to make up things that are not true. The last thing you want is for your audience to fact-check your claims and not trust you. Trust is sacred. Don't tarnish your name.

10. Scripted and forced.

If you're trying to fit yourself into a box and be like "everyone else" it's going to come across as phony to your audience. We want to get to know YOU not that woman you've been stalking on Instagram.
