How to Tell Your Story in Your Brand Graphics
When you think about telling your story to your audience, you may originally think about communicating through written or spoken words. However, you may not realize that your brand graphics can do a lot of talking for you.
The point with telling your story in your brand graphics is not to give all the details away at first sight, but you can include visual clues throughout your brand that will draw your audience in for more. As a result, you’ll have a brand that is unique and totally you. Which will only help you stand out even more in a crowded online space!
1. Write out your story.
No one knows your story better than you. Even though you lived your experiences out first hand, spending time to write everything down will help you make sure that you don’t leave any important details out. If you’ve kept a journal in the past, now is a great time to revisit old entries. You’ll want to refer back to your story in the following steps!
2. Highlight key moments, emotions and motifs.
Now that you have your story written out, look back through and take note of any major key moments such as turning points, emotions and common elements from beginning to end. Are there any specific locations, mental pictures, moods or tones in your story? Write these down! Take it a step further and create a mood board on Pinterest or a vision board collage that remind you of these pieces of your story.
3. Select colors, typography and patterns that support.
Did you know that colors, typography and patterns all have a psychology behind them? This step may require a bit of research on your part. Once you’ve highlighted the core pillars of your story, connect visual elements to each piece. You’re in luck! 4. Assess your current brand graphics.
Next, look over your brand style guide, your blog graphics, your social media posts, and any other marketing materials. Do these visuals already have hints of your selections from step three? Often, you may find that the choices you have previously made for your brand already connect to your story. The subconscious mind is mysterious and amazing!
5. Update brand graphics to reinforce your story.
If you find that your story isn’t currently represented in your brand graphics, now is the time to revise your visual brand. Remember, you’re constantly evolving and growing. Your story may be, too. It’s perfectly acceptable to rebrand your business as long as every change or update has a purpose and fully supports your story and brand mission.
