How & Why to Create a Content Bank

A content bank is my go-to tool for tracking content you’ve already created and related info like publish date, category, format, and response (clicks, shares and comments).

I personally like to organize my content bank by type (blog posts, freebies, webinars, videos, courses, newsletters and favorite social media posts). But you can build yours anyway that you want or in a way that best suits your business and content uses!

A content bank is your ticket to making the most of one your most valuable assets

Having a high-level view of all of your content in one place – makes it really easy to reuse, re-purpose and repackage your content, meaning you get more value out of every single piece. It’ll also help you recognize what content you might be missing and still need to create.

How to create your content bank?

My favorite tool for this is Trello (allows you to drag and drop everything around) but you can use anything you want! But you can use pretty much any tool – paper, spreadsheet, Trello, Asana, you name it!

Take Action!

  1. Choose your tool (one of these or something different completely): Google spreadsheet template, sample Trello build, PDF worksheet
  2. Create your content buckets (blog posts, newsletters, freebies, videos, webinars, etc.)
  3. Add your content with links if possible into their respective content type categories
  4. Add in additional information (publish date, format, topic category, images, how people responded to it by commenting or number of shares and clicks)
  5. Create a system for regularly adding your content to your bank on a weekly, monthly or quarterly basis.

How to use your content bank?

Once you have your content bank created (the longest part of this process), here’s some of the ways you can reuse that content:

  1. Writing a book? Your existing content paints a great outline and raw material for the book itself
  2. Create a course? Your existing content is great bonus content or even module additions
  3. Create a ‘start here’ page showcasing your best and most popular content
  4. Create a new email sequence? Pull from content you already have as the body of your emails
  5. What are your most popular pieces? It’s time to create a content promo campaign for each of these posts (add a simple content upgrade, schedule some social media, give it the Pinterest treatment (more on this one later), or even create a Facebook ad campaign to drive traffic to it)
  6. Make some tweaks and send your old posts in as guest post submissions
  7. Creating a webinar? Use the post as your outline. Add in some anecdotes and action steps and you’re good to go!
  8. Re-bundle your courses into evergreen product offerings
  9. Facebook group posts! Break down your content pieces into smaller chunks + add engagement elements.
  10. Want a boost in post views? Add a related content plug-in to the bottom of your posts (will pull by category), so that when a new reader comes to your website for the first time through a blog post, they’ll find other relevant content with a single click.

These 10 ideas are just scratching the surface of ways you can reuse your content (especially since you’ll have all of your content easily available at your fingertip).

The key to using the content bank is to keep using it once you’ve gone through the work of creating it! So every time you create a new post, add it to your bank.
